Softonic launches new ad sustainability initiative, reducing 21% of carbon emission

Barcelona, Spain, 11th December 2024 - Softonic, the world’s largest leading secure software distributor, has launched its new sustainability initiative designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of its advertising practices and operations by 21%. This commitment underscores Softonic’s ongoing efforts to minimise its ecological footprint, and make more efficient use of resources across the company.

Effective October 2024, Softonic is taking significant steps to remodel its advertising strategy – one of the company’s main sources of environmental impact. By reducing unnecessary ad requests through optimisation, Softonic aims to drive meaningful change in carbon emissions while protecting its revenue model.

Softonic is committed to sustainability and is actively developing a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan with clear goals for 2025 and beyond. This initiative will involve company-wide initiatives and new guidelines to follow.

"At Softonic, we recognise the vital role advertising plays in our revenue generation. However, we are acutely aware of the environmental impact associated with the underlying technology. As such, we are committed to proactive measures that optimise our advertising practices and minimise our carbon footprint. This is not just an ethical imperative, but also a response to the increasing regulation & social responsibility pressure on technology companies to embrace sustainability. By implementing strategies like optimised ad requests and 'lazy loading,' we have already achieved significant reductions in our carbon emissions, and we are dedicated to ongoing improvement in this critical area", said Xi Li, Director of Advertising at Softonic.

Softonic's commitment to sustainability is already yielding tangible results. By strategically reducing ad requests (on the main ad server) by 21%, the company has achieved an estimated annual reduction of 1.1 tons of CO2 emissions. In its ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact, Softonic is exploring a range of opportunities across technology, product and data usage to continually decrease the carbon footprint of its business operations.
