Softonic reveals rise in VPN Downloads amid global push for privacy and unrestricted connectivity
Barcelona, Spain, 25th November 2024 - To celebrate Computer Security Day, Softonic.com, the world’s leading secure software distributor, has released a list of the most downloaded security applications, highlighting the dominance of VPNs in cybersecurity. With seven out of the top 10 apps falling under the VPN category, this year’s trends underline an important shift toward privacy-focused and secure connectivity solutions.
VPNs take the lead
The surge in VPN downloads in 2024 reflects a growing demand for tools that offer security and privacy, especially in high-use regions such as Russia, Ukraine, and South Korea, where users are seeking reliable and secure access to the internet.
Leading this trend is Hamachi, the most downloaded security app of 2024, with 748,102 downloads, a 7.9% increase from 2023. Known for its ability to create secure virtual private networks (VPNs) that simulate LAN connectivity, Hamachi is particularly fevered by remote teams, gamers, and users seeking reliable remote access solutions.
WARP, a newcomer in 2024, debuted at second place with 486,356 downloads. The app’s innovative features, which go beyond basic privacy to enhance internet speed and security, have quickly positioned it as a user favourite.
Psiphon, a tool known for enabling access in regions with strict internet censorship, maintained its popularity but experienced a significant drop in downloads, from 976,776 in 2023 to 476,943 in 2024, a 51.2% decline.
New apps such as Secure VPN Safer Faster Internet and Planet VPN Fast Secure VPN entered the rankings at fifth and sixth places, respectively, evidencing the increasing competition and demand in the VPN space.
Softonic’s mission of accessibility plays an important role in this trend. By providing secure, free software downloads to users worldwide, Softonic ensures that individuals in any region can find reliable solutions for privacy, connectivity, and online freedom.
Antivirus apps
Avast Free Antivirus, which ranked number one in 2023 with over 1.1 million downloads, remains highly sought after, ranking second in 2024 with 509,937 downloads. This shows that there is still significant demand for antivirus solutions that offer free options like Avast, even as users increasingly prioritize tools that blend privacy, security, and performance.
Specialized tools
VPNs weren’t the only category to gain attention in 2024. Sandboxie, a niche application for secure testing, recorded a 46% increase in downloads, reaching 241,437 while holding its position at 9th place. Sandboxie creates a secure, isolated “sandbox” environment where users can run applications or open files without risking harm to their system. This containment ensures the main operating system remains protected from malicious software, corrupted files, or unknown programs.
Similarly, FortiClient, a trusted network security solution, maintained its place in the top 10. Its continued popularity highlights consistent demand for dependable endpoint protection, particularly among businesses and tech-savvy users who prioritize security in their digital environments.
“This year’s download trends highlight a growing focus on privacy,” said Ferran Gavin, Director of Catalog and Traffic at Softonic. “As privacy concerns continue to rise, users are increasingly seeking tools that protect their data, streamline access, and deliver a seamless experience. At Softonic, our role goes beyond facilitating access to these services, we strive to guide users in finding the best solutions to meet their evolving needs”.
The data paints a clear picture: as users navigate a more connected and privacy-conscious world, their preferences are changing. The rise of VPNs and the decline of traditional antivirus software reflect a growing demand for versatile, privacy-first solutions.
