5 Smart Home Product Trends to Watch for in 2018

In case you hadn’t noticed, our lives – and our homes – are getting smarter. That’s thanks in large part to advances in technology such as the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT). Over the past few years, we’ve seen increasing adoption of smart gadgets for the home, from locks and light bulbs to security systems and appliances. And with the prices of these products going down, more and more consumers are jumping on the smart home bandwagon. Here’s what we can expect to see in 2018.

Multi-functioning smart appliances

Want a stove that doubles as a microwave? How about a microwave that can also “blast chill” something from warm to cold in just seconds? These are just a few of the innovative ideas that are expected to hit the market in 2018. Some will undoubtedly be very expensive, at least at first, but others may be feasible for everyday consumers.

Enhanced robotic cleaners

Automated vacuums are nothing new, but the robotic cleaners of tomorrow are expected to be even more intuitive and feature-rich than what we’re already seeing in many homes today. For instance, one up-and-coming version offers the ability to map your entire home using the associated smartphone app so you can tell the device where to clean and which areas to avoid. No more knocked over dog dishes! There’s even a robotic window cleaner – a device that combines a squeegee and vacuum on a long extension pole. Seriously – what will they think of next?

Time-saving washers and dryers

If you’re not a fan of sorting your laundry, you’ll be thrilled with some of the new washing machines coming down the pipeline. Some have the ability to handle two or three separate loads at the same time. Others will be capable of washing an entire load in less time without using any extra water or energy. To speed things up even more, there will be driers that promise to do two loads of drying at the same time. Delicates and permanent press in the same load will soon become a reality.

Robots doing yard work

You may already have a robot keeping your floor clean, but pretty soon you’ll be able to farm out your landscaping to a robotic mower as well. There are actually several models already hitting the market, and while they’re pretty pricey, they’ll certainly save you some time on your yard work. And if you value your time and hate cutting the grass, it might just be worth the investment. (Not to mention being the envy of all your neighbors.)

Intuitive fridges

The refrigerators of today will pale in comparison to the ones we’ll soon begin seeing in homes across the globe. Some models have touchscreens and built-in cameras so you can see what’s inside using your smartphone. No more wondering if you’re out of milk or eggs while you’re at the grocery store. Others can gauge on their own when it’s time to restock on something and automatically place a shopping order for you via a grocery delivery service like Amazon.

As home technology continues to push new boundaries, people will enjoy even greater convenience and connectivity in their everyday lives. The five trends above should make 2018 an exciting year for those interested in making their homes and their lives even smarter.
